Page 1 of 2 With the onset of summer more babies and their families are heading out to the beach or local pool to cool down and have some good old fashioned summer fun. Before you head out though there are a few things to keep in mind so that your day at the water is both enjoyable and safe....
Common sense should prevail when you are going to the pool or beach. Here is a list of things to keep in mind when getting ready to go enjoy the water: - Sun protection is an absolute must these days. A wide brim hat and sunscreen are essential. Light airy long sleeved shirts and pants are available from special manufacturers and may be just the thing to keep your little monster cool and their skin protected from the sun
- Flotation devices should be approved flotation devices. Air matresses, tubes, inflated animals and even some jackets are not certified flotation devices and should never be relied upon to keep your child safe in the water. Look for coast guard certification seals and labels when buying a flotation device for your child.
- Always keep young children within arms reach. It can be only a matter of seconds for children to get into serious trouble and start drowning. Keep a constant eye on them and don't leave the area, even for just a minute. Don't assume someone else will watch your child closely while you go do something either. The ulitmate responsability for their safety is yours.
- Teach your child water safety and how to swim as soon as possible. Help provide them with the skills they need to be safe in the water. Taking swimming lessons or joining a swim club is an excellent way of doing this and can lead to life long friendships too.
