Baby Bill of Rights

Baby bill of rights Talk to me Sing, hum, babble or even read the funnies to me! I don’t know exactly what you’re saying, but I need to hear you. And I do know what you mean even if I don’t know the words. Like your voice tones mean, “I love you.” Or when you yell, I hear “You’re a pest!” Unless you communicate with me how can I learn? I learn from you. Hold me Everything is so big and new to me. I don’t understand where I am. Or who I am, and I get scared. But when you hold me, I feel better. Your warmth warms me. Your breath and heartbeat make me feel I belong. Belong here. Belong to you. Answer my cry I don’t cry to get you upset. Or to get you mad. I cry because I can’t tell you how I feel any other way. Maybe I’m cold…or wet…or hungry…or scared and lonely. Answer my cries. You’ll soon know what each one means. You won’t spoil me. You’ll help me be a better baby…and to make you happier too. Love me Like me, love me, just as I am. Don’t expect me to do what I can’t do. Like be toilet-trained. My muscles aren’t ready yet. I know I’m messy, but I’m growing. Overlook my baby weaknesses. You’re the most important person in my world. I can’t make it without you. So get to know me. Have fun with me. And love me…just as I am.

Cloth Diapers

Cloth Diapers If you have decided to use cloth diapers and are trying to navigate through the sea of cloth diapers that are available nowadays here is a little help. Definitions of the types of cloth diapers that are available to you Prefolds and wraps: Prefolds come as a flat diaper that has 4-8 plys of cotton or flannel in the center section and 2-6 plys of cotton or flannel on the outer edges. If you choose to use wraps with your prefolds you no longer need to use pins to secure your prefolds in place simply fold them to fit the inside of your wrap and then put them on your baby. If you decide to use a plastic or polyurethane diaper cover you can also secure the prefold using snappi diaper fastener, which are a great alternative to pinning. Pocket diapers and inserts: Pocket diapers have a waterproof outer layer with a soft cloth inside layer. Between those two layers there is a pocket in which a diaper doubler can be placed. A diaper doubler can be any absorbent material you wish to use. Even prefold diapers can be used inside a pocket diaper to increase its absorbency. Simply pull out the material from the pocket when you throw these diapers into the wash and you are all done. Fitted Diapers and covers: Fitted diapers are just as the name implies. They come in 4 standard sizes from infant to x large and when they fit properly provide excellent leak coverage for your baby’s little messes. A fitted diaper is different then a pocket diaper because they require the use of a wrap or diaper cover in order to keep the moisture away from babies clothes. All in Ones (AIO) AIOs look very similar to commonly used disposable diapers and are just as convenient to use. The AIO diapers have a waterproof outer layer and a fully absorbent cloth inner layer. These diapers are generally fitted diapers that have the cover built right in. You just put them on and when they are soiled take them off and throw then directly into the washing machine. AIOs are the closest thing to a disposable diaper in the cloth-diapering world.

Soothers, pacifiers and binkies oh my!

Soothers, pacifiers and binkies oh my! Many parents will eventually face the decision of whether or not to use a soother or pacifier. There are certainly times when they will help calm a baby. Babies have a natural desire, sometimes even a need, to suck and can find it very calming and comforting. Some babies just need to satisfy their sucking instinct and a soother may be just the thing for tired or sore nursing moms. When a soother may be helpful -baby still wants to suck after being nursed or fed -when it is desirable to have a calm or quiet baby such as in church or theater -when extra saliva will help relieve acid reflux or indigestion -when you prefer your baby not suck their thumb (easier to remove a soother than a thumb) When the soother is better avoided -during the first several weeks of nursing while baby is learning how to nurse -if it is starting to interfere with proper development of baby teeth and or jaw -if the soother is preventing the child from developing verbal communication skills -the child is only able to calm themselves with a soother Soother safety -never tie or attach a soother to your baby, it can be a strangulation hazard -always inspect the soother for tears, holes or other damage that can harm your baby -periodically give the nipple a good tug to check that it is still firmly attached -buy the size designed for the age of your baby -never sweeten the soother with honey or other sweet treat it can lead to early tooth decay and promote poor eating habits
